Law for one side; none for other: Finlay

Cllr John Finlay has hit out at a Republican bonfire to commemorate the hunger strikes.

The bonfire is piled up with approximately 100 tyres and is a fire hazard to local houses.

Furthermore a sign has been erected stating: "PSNI not welcome".

He said that there appears to be no rules for Republicans and but rules for Unionists in the Co. Antrim village.

Commenting John Finlay said:

"I have been contacted by a number of residents in the vicinity of this bonfire. They are very worried about their health and safety and that of their properties.

There are approximately 100 tyres piled up on it and it poses a serious fire risk.

Furthermore a sign has been placed on top of the bonfire saying: "PSNI not welcome."

It is clear that those organising this bonfire display do not respect the rule of law and this is saying something for the Republican community living there.

This is an embarrassment for Daithi McKay and Sinn Fein. He needs to clarify his position on his unconditional support for the PSNI.

There appears to be no rules for Republicans yet rules for Unionists in the village.

Local residents feel very intimidated by this Republican display which opposes the enforcers of the law here, the PSNI.

I call upon Sinn Fein to act and have this bonfire scaled down and the sign opposing the PSNI removed immediately.

If the shoe was on the other foot Sinn Fein would be screaming from the rooftops if this was a loyalist bonfire. This is double standards." said the local DUP councillor.
